Vincent Massey Community Centre Expansion, Bewdley
The LEED Silver designated space included a new multipurpose hall, library, commercial kitchen, public washrooms, community room and additional dressing rooms for the existing adjacent arena.
The owner, after award, requested that Peak design and construct a retrofit to the existing arena facility including replacement of the refrigerated slab and dasherboard, retrofit of 2 existing change rooms and provision for a warm viewing area.
The window of time during which the existing facility was not in operation was small requiring aggressive pre-planning to ensure community programs would not be adversely impacted by the construction program. A fire separation between new and existing required careful consideration once partial demolition exposed components to view. Poor soil conditions at one end of the new building required proactive review and solution to allow work to proceed with minimal interruption.
In spite of a significant increase in scope of work with the refurbishment of the existing area, the project was completed within 1 month of the originally scheduled completion date.
